The Race Is On In Galloway

Situated in the idyllic Central Otago countryside town of Galloway, is a 60’s home that offers more than meets the eye.

This charming lifestyle block is nestled on a small lane, where you can enjoy the quiet rural life whilst only being 5–8-minute drive away from the township of Alexandra and it’s amenities.

The most unique aspect of this property is undoubtedly its storage and 7 car garage facilities sitting adjacent to the main house. Something that a car enthusiast would dream of.

And that’s exactly why two and a half years ago owner Janine Douglas, along with her partner, decided to make the move to Galloway.

Except Janine is not just a car enthusiast, she’s the first woman to race with Touring Car Masters Australia at Bathurst back in 2019.

“The car came back home looking like it did when we went over, so that was a huge bonus!”

Janine and her partner were holidaying around Central Otago when it was just by chance they came across 35 Clare Road for sale, and they were immediately interested.

“Aside from the fact that we were both ready for a change and ready to move on from the north island, the garaging was the main attraction for us. We had very specific requirements, and I needed somewhere with shelter to store 7 vehicles at one time which is hard to come by.”

The couple made some small redecoration changes, but they also extended one of the sheds to host a workshop and to make it easier for hoist access.

“You can never have enough storage when you own race cars. At any given time I’d have 3 race cars, 2 classic cars, 3 road cars, a large truck and car trailer on the property.”

Harcourts Alexandra sales consultant Shannon Ruffell says, aside from the obvious garaging perks – the property has “all day sun and escapes the inversion layer and fog” that the bigger towns like Alexandra and Cromwell have. The home is also heated by a 23kw wood burner on those colder Central Otago winter days.

Shannon mentions the “Central Otago Rail Trail goes right past Galloway which connects to so many towns and is very popular amongst tourists”.

Likewise, Janine says she could “cycle right from home to work within 25 minutes.

With a property like this, Shannon says there are an array of people out there that might be interested and encourages people to come along to the open homes to have a good look around.

It would really suit anyone that has a workshop or operates from their garage. It could suit a retired farmer that’s looking to downsize but wants to hold on to some equipment. Ultimately, it’d really work well for someone who has a passion that they want to do from home and needs storage for machinery.”
