Prime lifestyle on the Cardrona River
On a terrace backing onto the Cardrona River, a north-west facing property is a surprise and delight.
It’s not until you venture down the front entranceway that you realise it boasts 360-degree views of Wanaka’s mountain ranges and 5.3ha of land perfect for family living.
The secluded lifestyle block sits in a prime location on Black Peak Road, tucked away off the Wanaka – Luggate Highway yet just five kilometres from Wanaka’s bustling lakefront.
Urban rural paradise
Vendors Margaret and Fred McElrea have lived here for the last nine years and say they couldn’t have found a better place to live – despite initially only looking for a Wanaka holiday home.
The McElreas fell in love with the property at first sight and knew it would be the perfect place to live full time.
“We immediately knew if we kept it as a ‘holiday home’, we’d probably never leave anyway,” says Margaret.
“We were drawn in by its location, on a terrace above the Cardrona River with beautiful views of mountains all around, how could you not love it.
“It’s quiet and private, yet so close to central Wanaka and all its amenities, you get the ideal rural-urban balance.”
Hosting the whole family
This spacious house is perfect for entertaining. The large kitchen and dining room open up to an extensive courtyard and BBQ area ideal for summer get togethers and events. Inside there’s also a family room and separate cosy lounge complete with a wood burner, providing plenty of space for winter dinners and hosting.
“We’ve got five children and a large extended family so many Christmases, birthdays and Easter holidays have been spent here, it’s a fantastic place host a large crowd.”
One son James, now a Harcourts real estate agent, was winemaking in Wanaka and was caretaker of the property for the first year. He says it’s where his wine label Black Peak Wines was conceived, as the view from one bedroom was directly out to Black Peak. “It all fell into place here,” he says.
A two-bedroom flat with the same spectacular views is attached to the main house. For Margaret and Fred, it’s been great place for family members stay for extended visits, and for the home’s new owners there are a variety of options to use it for such as Airbnb, as a long-term rental, or for use by an older family member.
Prime lifestyle block
Sitting on 5.3ha the property boasts large gardens and even has space for a small hobby farm.
Margaret’s passion is in the garden, so the grounds have been carefully nurtured over the years showcasing lush heritage roses and peonies.
Raised garden beds means plenty of produce for self-sufficiency in the summer months and the orchard produces juicy ripe Central Otago fruit.
Fred has enjoyed his time as a hobby farmer, raising sheep on the property and with great excitement had 15 healthy lambs delivered this spring.
Perfect family living
Strong family bonds have been made here, says Margaret.
“The kid’s playground, inground trampoline and swing have entertained and bonded grandchildren and grandparents. Our family loves the location especially in winter, we’ve basically offered five-star holidays for free.”
While they’re sad to leave, Margaret and Fred feel it’s time to move onto the next chapter of their lives.
“We only wish we were a bit younger, but it’s been a wonderful family place, we’ve seen all our grandchildren grow up here.”
