Oasis In The Heart Of Wanaka

The word ‘unique’ is bandied around a lot, but a property like this one truly deserves that accolade.

71 Youghal Street is a secluded slice of paradise in the heart of Wanaka – just a short stroll to the Wanaka lakefront and its many restaurants, cafés and retail outlets, and yet so peaceful you can hear the crystal-clear waters of the stream that flows through the grounds.

The 2,379m2 mature grounds alone are worthy of inspection – Bullock Creek temporarily splits at this point to create the home’s very own island.

The home and land wouldn’t be out of place on the edge of Lake Como, in The Hamptons or gracing an upmarket suburb in Auckland.

The owners have lived here for eight-and-a-half years and while they’re keen to move on to their new home, they admit it’s a wrench for them too.

Owner Derek Murphy, known to all and sundry as Murph, says he and wife Jo “absolutely loved” the property from the moment they saw it online and the garden was the icing on the cake.

“It’s an absolute jewel in the middle of Wanaka, and we couldn’t believe the section was so beautiful,” he says.

Spending much of his time working offshore meant trips back home often consisted of putting a lot of blood, sweat and tears into renovating the property. They created a tastefully removed property with an open-plan living area, new elevated deck and modern kitchen and bathrooms.

This family home has resonated with the sound of music and laughter emanating from a purpose-built music room, and daughter Tasmin still opens the curtains every day to take a photo of the view.

But when Covid travel restrictions meant Murph was forced to spend 10 months stuck in Australia, they made the tough decision to sell up and focus on family and lifestyle.

“I’m now retraining and studying so I can make a living in Wanaka and spend more time with our two children.

“There’s a really lovely ‘feel’ to this property and we hope another family will love it as much as we have. We’re so honoured and grateful to have lived here.”

Listing agents Chris Wright and Gavin Vize of the Harcourts Wanaka office say the property represents a rare chance for buyers to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and join the enviable Wanaka lifestyle.

“It’s ideally located for skiing, biking, golf, hiking and adventures on the lake.  With the choice of gourmet restaurants, award winning vineyards and a packed cultural calendar there are plenty of pursuits to keep the new owners entertained.”
